Become a Paid Participant

Are you interested in earning money while contributing to cutting-edge research on emotion and technology? The Affective Data Science Lab (ADSL) at Ontario Tech University is looking for participants to take part in our research studies. You don’t need any prior experience or special qualifications—just a willingness to help us explore new insights into how humans express and experience emotions.

How It Works

Our studies are typically designed to explore human emotions through various methods, such as observing facial expressions, voice recordings, or internal bodily changes (e.g., heartrate, respiration) in response to different stimuli. Your participation helps advance scientific research and can have real-world applications in areas like psychology, healthcare, and technology.

Compensation

We value your time and offer competitive compensation for your participation. While payment rates are tailored to each studies needs, we generally offer:

• $17 per hour for a one-hour study.
• $25 for 90 minutes of participation.

All payments are made in the form of gift cards, which you will receive at the end of the study.

Who Can Participate?

We welcome participants from all ages and backgrounds. You do not need to be a student at Ontario Tech University to take part. If you live in the Oshawa area, you are eligible to participate in our studies. Whether you’re a student, a professional, or retired, your participation is valuable and appreciated!

What to Expect

Once you sign up, you will be contacted with details about upcoming studies. Here’s what a typical session might look like:

1. Arrive at the Lab: You’ll be welcomed by our friendly research team at our lab located on the Ontario Tech University campus in Oshawa.
2. Consent and Instructions: You’ll receive a brief overview of the study, and we’ll explain what you’ll be asked to do. Before starting, you’ll sign a consent form to confirm your understanding and agreement to participate.
3. Participation: Depending on the study, you may be asked to watch videos, listen to audio clips, or engage in simple tasks while we observe your emotional responses.
4. Completion: At the end of the session, you will be debriefed on the study, and receive your gift card as compensation for your time.

We ensure that all studies are conducted in a safe, respectful, and comfortable environment, and you are free to withdraw from the study at any time. All studies run in the ADSL are approved by Ontario Tech's Research Ethics Board.
